Sam    -    Cub of Year

Olly - Achievement award for the most badges

Green six  -    Six of the Year

We had a very busy year with four camps and many other activities especially as 2007 was the centenary of the initial camp by Robert Baden Powell at Brownsea Island which started the scout movement.   The cubs were involved in all the special centenary events.  Additional activities were provided for the cubs to earn the four special centenary badges and join in the 21st World Scout Jamboree.

The year started with mainly outdoor activities including an Egg race challenge with the scouts.  For centenary camp we joined the beavers, scout and explorers at a joint camp with East Grinstead district at Pippingford Park. This was enjoyed by all despite the appalling weather.  To prepare for this, we looked at scouting from around the world by making flags and looking at scouting in India.  The cubs involved the public by taking part in the Redhill carnival and the gun run at the “Scouting in the Park” in Memorial Park, Redhill.

The Cub Scout centenary challenge was completed by a joint treasure hike from Reigate with the 24th (Nutfield) cubs and a pioneering challenge with the 2nd (St John’s ) cubs.  The older cubs took part in our own Sixer’s camp at Nutfield where they pitched their own tent, planned and completed a hike, cooked their own meals and learnt pioneering.  The Sixers also ran a stall and activity for Woodhatch Park fayre.

The summer finished with the cubs forming the Guard of Honour with other beavers, scouts and explorers at Baloo’s wedding and holding for all sections a Sunrise Event on 1st August in Meadvale to go with the Worldwide Sunrise Scout events.

Autumn started with the successful and competitive cub and parent camp at Park Farm, Banstead on a Crystal Maze theme. Bagheera ran a Jamboree evening so that the cubs shared in his experience of the World scout jamboree. We all participated in the nation-wide Big Draw and the cubs took part in the district go-karts. The older cubs attended the scout camp and took part in the scout “Now get out of that” activity.  The cubs completed the cycle badge and made bird boxes for our DIY badge.  This term concluded with a joint dance fitness evening with the 24th (Nutfield) cubs and the District Carol service.

The year started with first aid training and a celebration of Burn’s Night.  The Sixers cooked a vegetation meal in the district cooking competition.  As part of our community badge and International badge, we had evenings about the scouting charity “Building Brighter Future” and life in Africa. The family quiz night and sponsored game evening raised a total of £360 for the charity (including matching CAF Donation).  We had a successful indoor camp at Bentley Copse on a space theme where completed the astronomy badge and launched rockets.  The pack came third in the District Swimming Gala.

Akela and Bagheera have renewed their First Response First Aid training.  Bagheera volunteered to work for 3 weeks at the 21st World Scout Jamboree at Chelmsford, Essex looking after 50,000 explorer scouts and leaders from all around the world and up to 15,000 daily visitors.  Bagheera was presented with his 25 years service award at the Harvest Festival service.

We rely on the help of the leaders from the other sections, explorers doing their service and the parent rota to run activities and provide enough attention to the cubs whilst keeping within the guidelines when we put the out in to scouting.   Many thanks to all the people who have helped us this year, especially to the Scouts leaders and two Explorers and all those who have helped at camp.  As without their support, it is not possible to run all the activities.
